Evidence label: Independent analysis Last checked: August 22, 2026
Editorial note: This independent analysis is based on FramesDirect’s published lenses-only process and guarantee. Lens InsiderS did not mail a frame or test the service, and no affiliate or tracking link is included.
Keeping a favorite frame sounds simpler than starting over, but mailing it away introduces a different decision: is the exact frame supported, strong enough for new lenses, and worth the risk and time without it?
Short answer
FramesDirect says it can install progressive lenses in eligible existing frames, but the frame must exactly match a model, color, and size currently sold on its site. You must confirm eligibility with an optician, mail the frame with a valid prescription and signed waiver, and accept added risk for older or fragile frames. Some brands and sunglasses are excluded, including Costa and Oakley sunglass frames.

How this mail-in guide was evaluated
I reviewed FramesDirect’s official “Need Lenses Only?” page, ordering FAQ, and frame-and-lens guarantee. The guide evaluates eligibility, frame condition, measurements, waiver risk, and downtime; Lens InsiderS did not mail or inspect a frame for this article.
Main findings
FramesDirect’s lenses-only page says replacement progressive lenses are available when the existing frame is eligible. Eligibility is unusually specific: the exact model, color, and size must currently be supported/sold on FramesDirect.com, and the customer should contact an optician before shipping (FramesDirect lenses only).
The published process requires a valid prescription and signed frame waiver. After FramesDirect receives the frame, the order is confirmed and lenses are installed before return shipping. The retailer says some brands and sunglasses are ineligible and specifically excludes Costa and Oakley sunglass frames from lens replacement.
FramesDirect also warns that mailing older or fragile frames always carries risk and requires the waiver. An eligibility “yes” therefore does not mean the frame is risk-free to glaze, ship, adjust, or wear for another lens cycle.
Eligibility and mail-in decision table
| Question | Lower-risk answer | Stop/clarify trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Is the exact model, color, and size currently sold/supported? | Written confirmation from a FramesDirect optician | Similar-looking model or different size only |
| Is it a Costa or Oakley sunglass frame? | No | Official page says these sunglass frames are not accepted |
| Is the frame structurally sound? | No cracks, deep corrosion, loose eyewire, brittle plastic, or prior repair | Old, fragile, heat-damaged, drilled, glued, or irreplaceable frame |
| Can you accept the waiver risk? | You understand what loss/damage is and is not covered | Waiver language is unclear or the frame has sentimental/rare value |
| Can you be without the frame? | Backup eyewear covers shipping, lab work, and return | It is your only functional pair |
| Are progressive measurements defined? | Current Rx/ADD, monocular PD where available, and confirmed fitting-height method | Assumption that old lenses or PD alone supply every measurement |
Mail-in eligibility and risk checklist
Use these prompts to identify questions that need a written answer before shipping. They are not a clinical score or a retailer eligibility test.
- ☐ Frame is more than one lens cycle old or shows material fatigue.
- ☐ Frame was previously repaired, heated repeatedly, drilled, or glued.
- ☐ Exact model/color/size is not currently visible on FramesDirect.
- ☐ Frame is rare, sentimental, or difficult to replace.
- ☐ This is the only usable pair of glasses.
- ☐ New progressive design differs from the old lens design.
- ☐ Current monocular PD or fitting-height method is unknown.
- ☐ Prescription is strong, includes prism, or has changed substantially.
- ☐ Waiver coverage and return/remake treatment are not understood.
- ☐ Total door-to-door time has not been confirmed.
Resolve every relevant item with FramesDirect or an appropriate optical professional before mailing. If the frame is irreplaceable or visibly compromised, compare a new frame or a local lab that can inspect it in person.
Measurement questions for progressives in an old frame
An old frame supplies lens shape, not automatically a valid new fitting. Confirm:
- current prescription and ADD;
- right/left monocular PD when available;
- how fitting/segment height is captured for the frame as it sits now;
- whether old lens markings or previous measurements are usable;
- whether bridge fit, tilt, wrap, or frame adjustment changed;
- whether the selected progressive design needs a minimum usable lens height.
PD is horizontal centration and cannot replace vertical fitting height. A frame that has stretched or slides may position new zones differently from the old pair.
Persistent blur, headaches, double vision, pain, or sudden visual changes should be assessed by an appropriate eye-care professional. Do not change prescription values to troubleshoot the fit yourself.
Mail-in and downtime risks
FramesDirect says turnaround varies with prescription complexity and shipping and typically takes several business days after receipt. That statement does not include a guaranteed door-to-door date. Build in outbound shipping, intake, eligibility confirmation, lens production, possible questions, and return shipping. Keep a backup pair that matches your essential distance needs.
Use tracked, protective packaging and photograph the frame before shipping. Follow the retailer’s current instructions rather than relying on the address in a saved article, because routing can change.
Pros and limitations
Potential advantages: retain a familiar supported frame; progressive, bifocal, single-vision, and some prism options are described; optician review precedes installation.
Limitations: exact-match restriction; signed waiver; old/fragile frame risk; excluded brands; time without the frame; no guarantee that a familiar frame will suit a new progressive design or prescription.
Best for / not ideal for
Best for: a structurally sound, replaceable exact-match frame with verified support, current prescription data, clear progressive measurements, and backup eyewear.
Not ideal for: a rare or sentimental frame, visible material fatigue, an unsupported model, excluded sunglass brand, only functional pair, or unresolved fitting-height method.
Return and remake considerations
Ask how the lenses-only waiver interacts with the current 30-day lens guarantee, return shipping, frame damage, an inaccurate lens, and a prescription change. FramesDirect’s general guarantee says same-package lens replacements have restrictions (frame and lens guarantee). Obtain the lenses-only terms that apply to the exact order in writing.
Alternatives
- Buy a new supported frame with lenses to avoid patient-owned-frame risk.
- Use a local optical lab that can inspect the frame before accepting it.
- Keep the current pair intact and order a separate progressive pair.
